tl;dr: Social hosts furnished alcohol to a minor at their wedding reception. The minor later caused a car accident injuring a third party. The court held that the social hosts owed no legal duty to the injured third party.

Legal Significance: This case establishes that in Washington, social host liability for furnishing alcohol to a minor does not extend to third parties injured by the intoxicated minor, creating a clear distinction between the duties of social hosts and those of commercial vendors.

Case Facts & Court Holding

Key Facts & Case Background

Defendants Jamie and Anna Hicks hosted a wedding reception attended by approximately 300 guests, including the groom’s underage nephew, Steven Hicks. Wine, champagne, and other alcoholic beverages were available at a hosted bar. Steven Hicks, a minor, consumed alcohol at the reception. Around midnight, he left the event and, at approximately 1:00 a.m., was involved in an automobile accident with the plaintiff, Timmy Reynolds. Both drivers had blood alcohol levels of .17 percent. Reynolds suffered serious injuries and, along with his family, sued the hosts for negligence. The plaintiffs alleged that the hosts breached a duty of care by serving alcohol to a minor with knowledge that he was underage and would become intoxicated. The trial court granted summary judgment for the defendant hosts, finding they owed no duty to third parties injured by the intoxicated minor. The plaintiffs appealed, and the Washington Supreme Court granted direct review.
