Case Brief Summary & Legal Analysis

General Brief
4 min read

tl;dr: The Recording Industry sued to block the Rio MP3 player, alleging it was an illegal “digital audio recording device” under the Audio Home Recording Act. The court held the Rio was legal because it only copied files from computer hard drives, which are not “digital musical recordings.”

Legal Significance: The case established that devices copying digital music from a computer hard drive are not “digital audio recording devices” under the Audio Home Recording Act. This ruling legitimized early MP3 players and the consumer practice of “space-shifting” digital media for personal use.

Case Facts & Court Holding

Key Facts & Case Background

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sought to enjoin Diamond Multimedia Systems from distributing the Rio, a portable device that plays MP3 audio files. The Rio allows users to download MP3 files from a computer’s hard drive to the device for portable listening. The Rio itself cannot record audio from any source other than a computer; it cannot receive transmissions or make copies of the files it stores to send to other devices. RIAA alleged the Rio was a “digital audio recording device” under the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 (AHRA). The AHRA requires such devices to incorporate a Serial Copyright Management System (SCMS) to prevent serial copying and requires manufacturers to pay royalties on sales. Diamond argued the Rio did not fall under the Act’s definitions because it did not copy from a “digital musical recording” (like a CD) but rather from a computer hard drive, a multi-purpose storage medium.
