Case Facts & Court Holding

Key Facts & Case Background

Ralph and Marguerite Nardini sought to dissolve their 31-year marriage. Prior to the marriage, Ralph purchased a 50% interest in a fire equipment business for $2,500. During the marriage, the couple acquired the remaining interest and incorporated the business, Nardini of Minnesota. The business grew substantially, becoming the parties’ primary asset. Ralph served as president and manager, while Marguerite contributed through periodic bookkeeping, extensive civic and social involvement, and by being a homemaker. At dissolution, the trial court characterized half the business’s value as Ralph’s nonmarital property based on his premarital purchase. It adopted a low valuation for the business and applied a minority discount to each spouse’s half. The court also awarded Marguerite, a 56-year-old homemaker with limited employment history, temporary spousal maintenance of $1,200 per month for five years. Marguerite appealed the property division and the maintenance award.
