Michelle Kosilek, a transgender inmate diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder (GID) and serving a life sentence in a male prison, sued the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC) for violating her Eighth Amendment rights by denying her sex reassignment surgery (SRS). After a prior lawsuit, the DOC provided Kosilek with hormone therapy, electrolysis, and female clothing, which significantly improved her mental state and alleviated her gender dysphoria.
