Case Brief Summary & Legal Analysis
tl;dr: A party appealed the denial of its post-trial motions. The court held that this notice of appeal was sufficient to allow review of the underlying judgment, clarifying that language in a notice of appeal does not limit the scope of issues reviewable on appeal.
Legal Significance: In Maryland, a notice of appeal’s function is to initiate an appeal, not to limit the issues for review. An appeal from a final order denying a timely post-judgment motion brings the underlying judgment and all prior rulings up for review, regardless of the notice’s specific wording.

Case Facts & Court Holding
Key Facts & Case Background
B & K Rentals and Sales Co. (B & K) won a jury verdict against Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. (Universal). The trial court subsequently granted Universal’s motion for judgment notwithstanding the verdict (JNOV) on January 19, entering judgment for the defendants. Within ten days, B & K filed a timely “Motion for Reconsideration and Motion for New Trial” pursuant to Maryland Rules 2-533 and 2-534. The trial court denied these motions in an order dated February 17. B & K then filed a timely notice of appeal, stating it was appealing from the February 17 order. The Court of Special Appeals refused to consider the merits of the JNOV, holding that the notice of appeal’s specific reference to the February 17 order limited the scope of review to whether the trial judge abused discretion in denying the post-trial motions. B & K appealed to the Court of Appeals of Maryland.
Court Holding & Legal Precedent
