Case Brief Summary & Legal Analysis
tl;dr: A negligently moored ship broke loose, causing a chain-reaction collision with another ship and a bridge. The wreckage created a dam, causing upstream flooding. The court held all negligent parties liable for all resulting damages, including the unforeseeable flooding, expanding the scope of proximate cause.
Legal Significance: This case establishes that a negligent actor is liable for all direct damages of the same general type risked by the conduct, even if the precise manner of harm or its full extent was unforeseeable. It significantly expands the concept of proximate cause beyond strict foreseeability.

Case Facts & Court Holding
Key Facts & Case Background
During a winter thaw, ice and a strong current on the Buffalo River caused the vessel MacGilvray Shiras, owned by Kinsman Transit Co., to break free from its moorings at a dock operated by Continental Grain Co. The mooring was found to be negligent due to an improperly secured “deadman” and the failure to use anchors in a hazardous position. The ship’s keeper also failed to drop the anchors once the ship was adrift. The Shiras drifted downstream, struck the Michael K. Tewksbury, setting it adrift as well. The City of Buffalo was notified that the vessels were loose but negligently failed to raise a downstream drawbridge in time. Both vessels crashed into the bridge, causing its towers to collapse. The wreckage of the ships and the bridge formed a dam, which caused the river to back up and flood properties for nearly three miles upstream, resulting in extensive damage to various claimants.
