Case Brief Summary & Legal Analysis
tl;dr: A pilots’ union conducted a “sick-out” in violation of a federal court order. Displaced passengers sued for tortious interference. The court held that federal labor law preempts such state law claims to maintain a uniform national labor policy, even when the conduct violates a court order.
Legal Significance: This case affirms the broad scope of Garmon preemption, holding that state law remedies are preempted even when they supplement, rather than contradict, federal labor law by targeting conduct that violates a federal court order. The focus is on uniform remedies, not just consistent standards.

Case Facts & Court Holding
Key Facts & Case Background
The Allied Pilots Association (APA), the union representing American Airlines pilots, organized a “sick-out” to effect a work stoppage. American Airlines obtained a temporary restraining order (TRO) from a federal court requiring the APA to cease the sick-out. The APA defied the order, and the court subsequently held it in contempt, awarding American Airlines $45 million in compensatory damages. A class of over 300,000 passengers, represented by Kaufman, then filed suit against the APA to recover economic damages resulting from the sick-out. The plaintiffs asserted several claims, but the only one at issue on appeal was a state law claim for tortious interference with contract based on the union’s conduct after the TRO was issued. The district court found that this post-TRO claim was not preempted by federal labor law because the TRO established the conduct’s illegality. It dismissed the claim without prejudice for refiling in state court. The APA appealed, arguing the claim was preempted under the Garmon doctrine.
Court Holding & Legal Precedent
