Case Brief Summary & Legal Analysis

General Brief
4 min read

tl;dr: A beneficiary with a vested, absolute interest in a trust sought immediate payment, despite the trust’s terms postponing distribution. The court refused, upholding the testator’s right to control the timing of possession, thereby establishing the “Claflin doctrine” and rejecting the English rule.

Legal Significance: This case established the “Claflin doctrine” in American trust law, holding that a trust cannot be terminated prematurely, even with the consent of all beneficiaries, if doing so would frustrate a material purpose of the settlor. This is a direct rejection of the English Saunders v. Vautier rule.

Case Facts & Court Holding

Key Facts & Case Background

Wilbur F. Claflin’s will created a trust for the residue of his personal estate. The will directed the trustees to pay one-third of the proceeds to his son, Adelbert E. Claflin, in three installments: $10,000 upon reaching age twenty-one, $10,000 upon reaching age twenty-five, and the balance upon reaching age thirty. Adelbert’s interest in the trust fund was vested and absolute, with no other person holding any interest. After receiving the first payment at age twenty-one, but before reaching age twenty-five, Adelbert filed a bill in equity to compel the trustees to pay him the entire remaining balance of his share immediately. He contended that because he was the sole and absolute owner of the fund, any provision postponing his possession and enjoyment of the property beyond the age of majority was void as an unlawful restraint on his property rights.

Court Holding & Legal Precedent

Issue: May a sole beneficiary of a trust, who holds a vested and absolute interest, compel the termination of the trust and immediate payment of the principal if doing so would contradict the testator’s express intent to postpone possession until the beneficiary reaches a specified age?
